Our group has developed from the successful ‘East End Back Passages’ walking tours run for over a decade by Bafta award winning writer Alan Gilbey, who has been working in community arts in the borough all his life.
The group has now become an alliance of local enthusiasts, professional historians and artists successful in their own fields.
We aim to deliver unique, site specific storytelling events in East London which tell the lesser known histories of the area, in accessible and innovative ways.
Our current shows present East End stories though our exciting new concept, ‘Speed History’. It’s like speed dating, except when the bell rings you move in small groups to a teller of tales guaranteed to make you smile, ponder and wonder. Each five minute chunk of history is presented differently- but each with an element of performance and surprise.
Always sited in interesting and evocative venues whose history and geography become part of the performance, the event may also include a theatrical guided walk beforehand too. Past venues have included: the crypt of Christchurch, Spitalfields; the Bishopsgate Institute; St Leonards, Shoreditch; the Tower Hamlets Local History Library and the Whitechapel Idea Store. The public response has always been very enthusiastic.
